Training Tips for Budgies: A Step-by-Step Guide

Training your budgies can be one of the most rewarding experiences of bird ownership. Understanding their unique personality traits is key to successful training.

Training Temperament

Eager learners, respond well to millet treats. Can learn extensive vocabulary.

Getting Started

Before beginning any training, ensure your budgies is:

  • Settled into your home for at least 2 weeks
  • Comfortable eating in your presence
  • Showing signs of curiosity about you (approaching the cage bars, making eye contact)

Step-Up Training

The step-up command is the foundation of all bird training:

  1. Position your hand just above your bird's feet, gently pressing against the lower belly
  2. Say "Step up" in a clear, cheerful tone
  3. Reward immediately with a small treat the instant your bird steps onto your hand
  4. Practice 3-5 times per session, keeping it short and positive

Small birds can step up onto a single finger.

Best Training Treats

Spray millet is the gold standard for small bird training — break off tiny pieces for quick rewards.

Training Schedule

  • Session length: 5-10 minutes maximum
  • Frequency: 2-3 sessions per day
  • Best time: Morning, when your bird is most alert and slightly hungry
  • End on success: Always finish with a behavior your bird can do well

Common Training Challenges

Small birds can be flighty and nervous — move slowly and let them come to you.

Advanced Training Goals

Once step-up is mastered, you can move on to:

  • Recall training (coming when called)
  • Target training (touching a stick on command)
  • Speech training — Budgies can learn some words with patience
  • Trick training (wave, spin, shake hands)
